When I board my dog, do you take them out for walks?

We have large doggie suites that consist of a 4' X 5' bedroom area with a doggie door leading out to a 14' X 12' outdoor patio area that is covered with sunscreen and has a misting system for the summer.  If you would like for your dog to have a play time, we will do a 15 minute one on one playtime with your pet(s) for $5.00 for the first pet and $2.50 for each additional pet from the same family who has a play time at the same time.

Do you require vaccinations for services at your facility?

Arizona Pet Resort  requires that all pets be current on all vaccinations to board, be groomed, or for the surgery.  The vaccinations must be given by a licensed veterinarian, as we do not accept home given or breeder given vaccinations.

What vaccinations do you require?

For dogs: we require Rabies, DHPP and 6 month Bordetella (canine cough)

For cats:  we require Rabies, Leukemia and FVRCP

All vaccinations must be veterinarian given and we require proof in the form of a receipt or by calling to verify veterinary records.

Do you require flea and tick preventative?

Yes, we approve of and sell Frontline Plus for cats and dogs, and will accept K-9 Advantix.  Both of these products are good for 30 days.  We do not accept any other brands of preventative, including ones sold over the counter in pet stores and grocery stores.

If I know what is wrong with my pet, why do I need an exam by the doctor?

Although you may know what is wrong or think you know what is wrong, from time to time, the doctor may request seeing your pet and doing an examination before prescribing additional medications.  Since the health of your pet changes as they grow and/or are on medications, it is important for the doctor to do an exam and determine if there are additional issues or if the prescription has changed since the last time he examined your pet.

I have had my dog on Heartgard for years and have never missed a month.  Why do I need to have another blood test done before you refill my prescription?

Merial, the manufacturer of Heartgard, the leading preventative medication on the market, has set the protocols, which include:

For a new puppy, under 5 months of age, medication is given without testing, and then testing is done after 6 months.  Further testing then occurs yearly.

For adult dogs, testing occurs yearly, regardless of if they have ever been on Heartgard.

I recently heard about a doggie flu shot.  The flu season is just about over so I shouldn't worry about this, right?

Canine Influenza, H3N8, can be a deadly condition and can occur anytime of the year.  It is very contagious and unless a dog has already had the illness and recovered, virtually every dog exposed to the virus will become infected.  This is because the virus is relatively new and dogs have no natural immunity to it.  Although about 20% of the dogs do not show signs of the disease, they can be carriers and infect other dogs.

What are the signs of Canine Influenza H3N8?

Persistent cough, both moist and dry, low grade fever, lack of energy, loss of appetite.  These same symptoms describe bordetella or canine cough.  The difference is the Canine Influenza H3N8, left untreated, can turn into pneumonia and the dog could die.

Is my dog at risk for Canine Influenza H3N8?

Yes, if they do any of the following:

  • Come from a shelter, rescue center, breeding kennel or pet store
  • Board at a kennel or go to doggie day camp
  • Attend group training
  • Visit a Groomer, dog parks, or engage with other dogs on daily walks
  • Enter dog events
  • Come into contact with other dogs in the waiting room during visits to your veterinarian

I heard there is a Canine Influenza H3N8 vaccination.  Do you have it?

Yes, Arizona Pet Resort has a supply of Canine Influenza H3N8 vaccine.  Upon your request, we would administer an injection, followed by a booster vaccination in three weeks.  That would provide protection for one year.

Can my dog come to Doggie Day Camp?

We would love to have your dog in Doggie Day Camp!  We have a few rules which include they must be current on all three vaccinations, while strongly suggesting they get the Canine Influenza H3N8 vaccine as well.  Once a month, we will administer Frontline Plus Flea and Tick Preventative unless you provide proof that you are currently purchasing it through another veterinarian.  We also require that the pet be spayed or neutered.  On the first day, our qualified staff will perform a temperament test.  If your dog passes the test, we will allow him to come to Doggie Day Camp.  We provide money saving plans for Doggie Day Camp by offering "Passes" which you can buy.  Ask the front desk for more information on the passes.

Do you board cats?

Arizona Pet Resort LOVES cats.  The owners are proud caretakers of 4 cats themselves.  We offer large kitty condos and would love for you to stop by for a tour.  We know you will love what you see.  No cages for our feline friends!

What if my pet gets sick while boarding with Arizona Pet Resort?

We offer two plans to help with that unexpected illness. You can buy the Healthy Pet Plan at $5.00 for each pet you have boarding with us. The $5.00 covers the entire stay, up to 30 days, and will cover any medications or emergency procedures that might come up while they stay here, up to $500.00. This program excludes pre-existing conditons. Age limitations are 6 months to 10 years. We do not cover bordetella or canine cough as that is a very contagious disease and the vaccination does not cover it 100%. However, the vaccination does lessen the effects of the disease.

Do you accept insurance for the veterinarian?

We are glad to give you an extra billing statement that you may file with your insurance company.  You will then be reimbursed.  We also work with a local company call United Pet Care.  This is a discount service, and is very affordable.  Please visit their web site for more information and to become a member. www.unitedpetcare.com

Does my pet really need its teeth cleaned?

We get that question a lot.  Probably the most important thing you can do for your healthy pet is to have a dental at least once a year.  This is a preventative procedure that helps keep your pet healthy.  Keeping the teeth clean also keeps bacteria out of the blood stream and the internal organs healthy.

Why should I have blood work done on my young pet?

By doing blood work on a relatively young pet who is healthy, our hospital will have a bench mark to look at should your pet become ill.  We will be able to compare blood work and may find out what is wrong without doing additional and sometimes costly procedures.

How do I prevent my dog from getting Parvo?

Parvo is a very nasty, expensive and often fatal disease which can be prevented by vaccinating.  We start vaccinating at 7 weeks, and continue to do boosters every 3 weeks until the dog reaches 16 weeks.  The exception is in "at risk" breeds, which we administer an additional booster in week 18.  The "at risk" breeds include Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Boxers, German Shepherds, Labradors, Great Danes, Mastiffs and other giant breeds.

The Doctor recommended a special diet, that you sell.  What's the difference?

Arizona Pet Resort sells only Veterinary Prescribed Royal Canin diets for Dogs and Cats. This high quality food comes in many varieties and is prescribed for Healthy pets or for specific health issues. We like the fact that Royal Canin has very high quality standards and the food does not leave the manufacturing plant without at least one bag from every run being tested for quality control. This is one of the reasons when there is a food recall, such as we saw a few years ago, that Royal Canin has not been a part of the recalls. In addition, we love the fact that the food is not loaded with corn, a known allergen and that it is preserved naturally using such things as Rosemary Extract. Please visit their web site for more information. www.royalcanin.us

A healthy diet is important for your pet's life just as a healthy diet is important for humans. This is a great way to take positive action to insure a healthy life for your pets.
