The Arizona Health Department is warning visitors to the state to be wary of rabid animals this year.
A news release on the department's website says that there have been 47 confirmed cases in 2009 already: 29 skunks, 17 foxes, and 1 bobcat. Five people and 29 domestic animals were exposed as a result. Last year the state reported 176 lab-confirmed cases. Eighty-nine of those cases were from bats. Most of the rabid animals came from the southeastern desert, or near the popular tourist areas of Flagstaff and Sedona.
