European researchers have completed a study which suggests a link between air pollution and primary lung cancer in dogs.
The Swiss and Italian scientists studied black dust matter in the lungs (anthracosis) of 35 dogs with primary lung cancer and 160 controls. The researchers used light microscopy to look at the amount, histological appearance and birefringence of anthracosis in the lungs, and the odds ratio (OR) calculated for dogs with primary lung cancer.
The study found an increased risk of lung cancer in dogs with higher amounts of anthracosis, which they said suggests "an association between anthracosis due to inhalation of polluted air and lung cancer in dogs."
